Each existing quarry must be considered on its merits with proper consideration being given to social and environmental effects. The opinion of the local community, who may have suffered years of disruption and difficulty, must be considered as a high priority. That said, it is certain that extending an existing quarry is easier and less controversial than starting a new one.

We see no reason for a different approach. We see a real need to consider the transport of these bulky and heavy materials as a whole , so that a series of local developments do not add up to an impossible load on a deficient and defective road system.

Q8 How important is it to maintain a geographical spread of sand and gravel quarries across the County to minimise transport distances

Newark cannot stand any more traffic unless there is a very serious investment in the road network in and around the town.
Resources as near to the end-user as possible should be exploited first to minimise the load on the transport system. Within that context, a fair geographical spread is desirable.
Newark does NOT have a good links with other areas. It is often grid-locked due to a very poor local transport infrastructure. It needs major investment to match the road east midland road network which seeks to use the overloaded roundabouts and single lane bye-pass around Newark. The 18th century Kelham Bridge is only the most notorious and picturesque of the transport problems with which the town is battling. Seasonal overload (caused by deliveries to the British Sugar factory and holiday traffic), must also be considered before any further load can be placed upon the town road system.

Q10 Is it economical to transport mineral by river barge and if so should proposed quarries with the potential for moving sand and gravel by river barge be prioritised over other proposals?

Barge transport is superficially attractive but it is only viable if the quarry and the customer have access to a suitable wharf or dock. The low value of this aggregate precludes any significant investment in such facilities, so the opportunities for barge transport are not likely to be great unless there is a very large contract involved. River dredging material has been delivered to Cromwell quarry for processing in the past.
