A quantitative assessment of the likely proportion of recoverable land surface at a proposed site should form part of the site selection process, and will require a minimum standard of information from developers for every proposed site, including depths of overburden, deposit and water table. The total areas of open water created and agricultural land lost should form part of the impact assessment.
