Barging seems to be the most feasible sustainable transport method and more data about the network should be incorporated in the Minerals Local Plan evidence base, especially for distant markets. Barging requires regular maintenance of waterways and of waterway/road/rail interchange infrastructure along the extended mineral export route. This requires good regional authority co-operation and forethought. Alternative infrastructure has been allowed to fall into a neglected and disconnected state.
